Why a short fade in and out matters
Audio is a waveform swinging above and below zero. If your cut lands at a moment when the wave is partway through a swing, playback jumps from silence straight to that mid-level value, a sudden step that your speaker reproduces as an audible click or pop. A fade fixes this by ramping the volume up at the very start of the clip and back down at the end, so the audio eases in and out instead of slamming. That means an exported MP3 can be up to about 26 milliseconds longer than the exact region you selected.
